Stolen/ Forged Check Arrest
Waynesboro Police responded to Planters Bank located at 251 N. Poplar Ave. in Waynesboro yesterday at around 11:00 A.M. for a subject who tried to pass a check believed to have been stolen and forged. Bank personnel identified the suspect who was leaving as officers arrived and he was detained. Investigation revealed that the subject had entered the bank and attempted to pass a check for an amount in excess of $1000.00 with a North Carolina ID. The check appeared to be from a custom truck top company located in MT. Crawford, Va. and, according to further information, was similar to a string of passed stolen checks both in Augusta County and Lexington beginning on September 7th, totaling more than $24, 000.00. Upon obtaining the endorsed check the suspect was arrested and charged with Felony Uttering a Forged Check, Possession of Stolen Property and Felony Obtaining Money by False Pretenses. He is being held in the Middle River Regional Jail without bond pending further investigation by law enforcement agencies in jurisdictions having similar crimes.
