Person Air Lifted After 81 Wreck - September 2
Update
At 11:45 pm a Ford Mustang driving at a high rate of speed was coming off the exit ramp from I-64 when it struck a guard rail. The car lost power causing its head lights to go out. The two tractor trailers that were traveling north did not see the car and hit it. The driver was thrown from the car and was found on the right side of the road where paramedics prepared him to be transported to UVA by helicopter. It was unclear if the driver was wearing his seat belt. The passenger of the car was wearing a seat belt and was taken out of the car and transported by ambulance to AMC. No truck driver was injured, but both trucks had to be towed from the interstate. Virgina State Police believe that the driver of the Mustang had been drinking and are awaiting a blood test to determine his blood alcohol content. I-81 was reopened at 5:06 am in both lanes of travel. The names of the driver and passenger of the car have not been released because of their injuries and pending notifications of family.
