VDOT statewide litter pickup set for Sept. 15

RICHMOND – Fall is in the air and Adopt-A-Highway volunteers are getting into gear to clean up litter and debris along more than 14,000 miles of Virginia highways. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) statewide event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, weather permitting.

Volunteers will work at various times throughout the day. Motorists are encouraged to drive cautiously and look for “Cleanup Crew Working” signs along with volunteers dressed in bright orange vests.

Twice annually, VDOT holds litter collection days to raise awareness and encourage volunteers to keep Virginia highways clean by removing trash and other debris. Litter is not only unsightly, but also it can create dangerous hazards and obstacles for motorists. VDOT provides volunteers with necessary equipment and safety support including trash bags, vests, safety information and highway signs to alert motorists.

Established in 1988, Virginia’s Adopt-a-Highway program has nearly 11,000 volunteer groups and is considered one of the largest programs in the country. Adopt-a-Highway volunteers alone provide the equivalent of $3 million in savings annually in litter control services.
