TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF January 14 - 18, 2008
Highway work zones in the Staunton District
The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath , Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland , Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
No activity reported.
Interstate 81
* Various locations –Guardrail installation. Alternating lane and shoulder closures both northbound and southbound. Night work, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* (NEW) Mile markers 205 to 237 – Northbound and southbound lanes, Debris clean up on Wednesday.
Primary Roads
* Route 250 –Trucks entering from Route 636 between Route 637 to Route 358 and from Route 608 between Route 608 to Route 1360.
* Route 256 – Shoulder repairs with single lane closures from Route 11 to Route 340. Flaggers will control traffic.
* Route 262 – Debris clean up from I-81 to Route 11 at Verona on Wednesday, Jan. 16.
* Route 340 (Rosser Avenue) – Trucks entering from work site from Route 608 to Route 1501 for utility work with flagger traffic control during daylight hours.
Secondary Roads
* Route 608 – Tree Trimming. Route 935 to Rockbridge County Line on Monday through Friday during daylight hours.
Route 608 - Utility Company Tree Trimming
* (NEW) Route 612 – Shoulder repairs with single lane closures between Route 792 and 608. Flaggers will control traffic.
* Route 657 –Tree trimming. Route 340 to Route 1205 on Monday through Friday during daylight hours.
* Route 697 – Tree trimming. Route 11 North to Route 11 South, Route 11 to Route 252 on Monday through Friday during daylight hours.
* Route 710 - Utility Company Tree Trimming
* Route 717 - Utility Company Tree Trimming
* Route 721 - Utility Company Tree Trimming
* Route 724 - Utility Company Tree Trimming
* Route 726 - Utility Company Tree Trimming
* Route 739 ( Moffett Branch Road ) – Intersection of Routes 739 and 741 ( Old Quarry Road ) to 0.75 mile east of Route 875. Closed Tuesday, January 8, 2008 through Thursday, January 17, 2008. Bridge deck replacement. Detour will be as follows: Westbound traffic take Route 741 ( Old Quarry Road ) east to Route 607 ( Mt. Solon Road ) north to Route 42 ( Scenic Highway ) south to Route 739. Eastbound traffic take Route 42 north to Route 607 south to Route 741 west to Route 739. Road Closed and Detour signs will be posted.
Route 819 – Tree trimming. Route 252 to End of State Maintenance on Monday through Friday during daylight hours.
Route 831 – Tree trimming. Route 340 to Route 654 on Monday through Friday during daylight hours.
* (NEW) Various Roads – Shoulder repairs and brush cutting. Scraping and machining non-hard surface roads.
MOST LANES REOPENED FOLLOWING MILTIPLE ACCIDENTS
STAUNTON – Both Interstate 81 northbound lanes are now open at mile marker 244 in Harrisonburg . A tractor trailer jack-knifed and was blocking both northbound lanes. This is between exit 243 at Route 11 south and exit 245 at Port Republic Road. All southbound lanes at this location are open.
The Staunton Traffic Management Center is also reporting the following incidents that have been reported by local law enforcement authorities. No cause has been given yet, but a small but intense snow squall hit the area right around the time these events took place.
On I-81 at mile marker 247 in Harrisonburg , the southbound left lane is closed due to an accident with a passenger vehicle. This is near exit 247 at the Route 33 interchange.
In Frederick County , just south of Winchester , all lanes are now open at mile marker 309 and mile marker 307, which is between exit 310 at Route 37 and exit 307 at Route 277 in Stephens City . Both of these southbound lane incidents involved passenger vehicles according to the Staunton TMC.
In Page County eastbound and westbound lanes were closed on Route 211 near the Shenandoah County line. All lanes have reopened.
Motorists should expect delays in these areas.
