THREE CONTRACTS AWARDED IN THE STAUNTON DISTRICT



STAUNTON – On June 15, 2007, Virginia Department of Transportation Commissioner David Ekern approved three projects located in the VDOT Staunton District.



The Staunton District serves Clarke, Warren , Page, Frederick , Shenandoah, Rockingham, Augusta , Highland , Rockbridge, Alleghany, and Bath counties.



W-L Construction and Paving Inc. of Chilhowie was awarded a $1,514,970.48 contract in Frederick County for pavement restorations and guardrail upgrades and repairs to extend the life of the road and its safety for the traveling public on various primary routes. A completion date is set for Dec. 1, 2007.



Plecker Construction Company of Staunton was awarded a $336,856.00 contract on Route 631 ( Ladd Road ) in Augusta County to add a right turn lane from Route 285 onto Route 631 and to add two lanes and install a raised median on Route 631. The project is located from Route 285 to 0.15 mile south. A completion date is set for Oct. 19, 2007.



DLB Inc. of Hillsville was awarded an $878,357.00 contract in Augusta County for rural rustic road reconstruction on Route 797, Route 785, Route 730 and Route 782. Route 797 from Route 608 to Route 796 will improve 1.2 miles of unstabilized road. Route 785 (Miller Road) from Route 784 to 0.35 mile east of Route 782 will improve 1.1 mile of unstabilized road. Route 730 ( Stribling Spring Road ) from Route 756 to Route 761 will improve 0.54 mile of unstabilized road. Route 782 ( Barnhart Road ) from Route 612 to Route 617 north will improve 1.15 mile of unstabilized roadway. All locations will be widened to 16 feet with a 1 foot gravel shoulder. One-way traffic will be maintained by flaggers during working hours, and the roadway will be reopened to two-way after non-working hours. A completion date is set for Nov. 2, 2007.

Highway work zones in the Staunton District



The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath , Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland , Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

AUGUSTA COUNTY

Interstate 64

* No activity reported.



Interstate 81

* Mile marker 220 to mile marker 237 – Debris cleanup Monday through Friday.



Primary Roads

* Route 11 – Mowing Monday through Friday.

* Route 11 – Debris cleanup Monday through Friday.

* Route 250 – Expect delays due to trucks entering from Route 636 between Route 637 to Route 358 Monday through Friday.

* Route 256 – Mowing Monday through Friday.

* Route 256 – Debris cleanup Monday through Friday.

* (NEW) Route 262 – Mowing Monday through Friday.

* Route 275 – Debris cleanup Monday through Friday.

Secondary Roads

* Route 602 (Walkers Creek Road) – Road closed due to bridge replacement at .20 mile north of Route 681 to 3.0 miles south of Route 682 Tuesday, July 10 through Friday, August 31. Southbound traffic should detour using Route 682 east ( McKinley Road ) to Route 252 south ( Middlebrook Road ) to Route 681 west ( Mt. Hermon Road ) to Route 602. Northbound traffic should detour using Route 681 west to Route 252 north to Route 682 west to Route 602.

* (NEW) Route 616 (Dam Town Road) – Road closed from Route 777 to Route 926 in the Fort Defiance area Wednesday, July 25 at 7 a.m. to Friday, July 27 at 5:30 p.m. to replace a structure with concrete pipe. Signs and a detour will be in place.

* Route 636 – Shoulder closure due to road widening from Route 285/608 to 300-feet east of the AMC Hospital entrance through Friday, July 13.

* Route 650 (North Oak Lane) – Road closure over South River due to bridge replacement from Route 624 to Route 664 with signs posted through October 15, 2007. Traffic detoured on Route 624 ( Mt. Torrey Road ) and Route 664 ( Lyndhurst Road ).

* Route 727 ( Wolfe Ridge Road ) – Road closure due to bridge replacement in the town of Sangersville through August 10, 2007. Signs will be posted and a detour will be in place.

* Route 731 – Bridge deck maintenance on bridge over North River at 0.03 mile east of Route 730 with one lane closure using flagger traffic control.

* (NEW) Route 750 – Patching Monday through Friday with one lane road.

* Route 774 – Patching with one lane road Monday through Friday.

* Route 775 – Patching with one lane road Monday through Friday.

* Route 935 – Work zone, expect truck entering road between Route 608 and Route 1043 Monday, July 9 through Monday, July 16. Signs will be posted to alert motorists.

* Various Roads – Patching, mowing and scraping dirt roads.

JAMES W. WHITE, JR. NAMED VERONA RESIDENCY ADMINISTRATOR



STAUNTON – James, W. White, Jr. has been named Virginia Department of Transportation Verona Residency Administrator. The announcement was made on Monday, July 2 by VDOT Staunton District Administrator Garrett Moore.



White began his career at VDOT in 1966 as a skilled labor rodman and moved to survey party supervisor. He later became Marine Resources Surveyor of the Interstate 264 Downtown Tunnel in Norfolk and then was promoted to Assistant Resident Engineer of the Norfolk Residency. In 1988 he became Lexington Residency Administrator. In 2006 he joined Anderson and Associates of Blacksburg.



Moore states, “Jimmy White brings a wealth of expertise to Augusta and Highland counties. His knowledge of engineering, government and his strong commitment to the citizens of Virginia are hallmarks of his leadership style.”
