TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF July 16-20, 2007

Highway work zones in the Staunton District



The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath , Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland , Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

AUGUSTA COUNTY

Interstate 64

* (NEW) Mile marker 93 – Alternating lane and shoulder closures at the underpass on Route 834 (Chickory Hill) due to cleaning and painting bridge Sunday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. with flagger traffic control.



Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 205 to mile marker 237 – Debris cleanup Wednesday, July 18.

* Mile marker 220 to mile marker 237 – Debris cleanup Friday, July 20.

* (NEW) Mile marker 237 to mile marker 205 – Guardrail work north and southbound on the right shoulder Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

* (NEW) Various bridges – Bridge deck maintenance on bridges north and southbound with one lane traffic from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning.



Primary Roads

* Route 250 – Expect delays due to trucks entering from Route 636 between Route 637 to Route 358 Monday through Friday.

* (NEW) Route 252 – Mowing from Staunton City limits to Rockbridge County line.

* (NEW) Route 254 – Mowing from Waynesboro City limits to Route 11 Monday through Friday.

* (NEW) Route 254 – One lane traffic from Route 693 to Route 42 due to paving, shoulder work, and line marking from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday with traffic controlled by flaggers and pilot truck.

* (NEW) Route 262 – Debris cleanup Wednesday, July 18.

* Route 262 – Mowing from Interstate 81 to Route 11.

* Route 340 (Rosser Avenue) – Trucks entering from worksite from Route 608 to Route 1501 for utility work in the street with flagger traffic control during daylight hours Monday through Friday.



Secondary Roads

* Route 602 (Walkers Creek Road) – Road closed due to bridge replacement at .20 mile north of Route 681 to 3.0 miles south of Route 682 Monday, July 16 through Friday, August 31. Southbound traffic should detour using Route 682 east ( McKinley Road ) to Route 252 south ( Middlebrook Road ) to Route 681 west ( Mt. Hermon Road ) to Route 602. Northbound traffic should detour using Route 681 west to Route 252 north to Route 682 west to Route 602.

* (NEW) Route 608 – One lane traffic from Route 635 to Route 340 due to paving, shoulder work, and line marking Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with traffic controlled by flaggers and pilot truck.

* (NEW) Route 608 – Paving from Route 340 to Route 610 in Stuarts Draft Monday, July 16 and Tuesday, July 17.

* (NEW) Route 616 – Spot leveling in Weyers Cave Area Monday through Friday with one lane road.

* Route 616 (Dam Town Road) – Road closed from Route 777 to Route 926 in the Fort Defiance area Wednesday, July 25 at 7 a.m. to Friday, July 27 at 5:30 p.m. to replace a structure with concrete pipe. Signs and a detour will be in place.

* Route 636 – Shoulder closure due to road widening from Route 285/608 to 300-feet east of the AMC Hospital entrance with estimated completion July 31, 2007.

* Route 650 (North Oak Lane) – Road closure over South River due to bridge replacement from Route 624 to Route 664 with signs posted through October 15, 2007. Traffic detoured on Route 624 ( Mt. Torrey Road ) and Route 664 ( Lyndhurst Road ).

* Route 727 ( Wolfe Ridge Road ) – Road closure due to bridge replacement in the town of Sangersville through August 10, 2007. Signs will be posted and a detour will be in place.

* Route 775 – Patching in the Mt. Sidney area with one lane road Monday through Friday.

* (NEW) Route 777 – Patching in the Mt. Sidney area with one lane road Monday through Friday.

* (NEW) Route 778 – Spot leveling in Weyers Cave Area Monday through Friday with one lane road.

* (NEW) Route 834 – Alternating lane and shoulder closures due to clean and painting bridge Sunday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. with flagger traffic control.

* Route 935 – Work zone, expect truck entering road between Route 608 and Route 1043 with work expected to be completed by Monday, July 16. Signs will be posted to alert motorists.

* Various Roads – Patching and mowing. Surface treatment Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with traffic controlled by flaggers and pilot truck.

COMMONWEALTH TRANSPORTATION BOARD APPROVED TWO CONTRACTS FOR STAUNTON DISTRICT



STAUNTON – On Thursday, June 21, the Commonwealth Transportation Board approved two projects located in the VDOT Staunton District.



The Staunton District serves Clarke, Warren , Page, Frederick , Shenandoah, Rockingham, Augusta , Highland , Rockbridge, Alleghany, and Bath counties.



R. G. Griffith, Inc. of Chantilly was awarded a $ 3,834,449.00 contract in the City of Winchester to widen South Loudoun Street from approximately 24 feet to 56 feet with a box culvert extension near Featherbed Lane and a five foot side walk, curb and gutter to be added. The length of the project is 0.37 mile and extends from 0.06 mile south of Weems Lane to 0.01 mile south of Featherbed Lane . A completion date is set for Sept. 8, 2008.



The Richardson-Wayland Electrical Co. LLC of Roanoke was awarded a $5,258,093.00 contract in the Northwestern Region, which includes the Staunton District and portions of the Culpeper District. Those counties consist of Clarke, Warren , Page, Frederick , Shenandoah, Rockingham, Augusta , Highland , Rockbridge, Alleghany, Bath , Greene, Albemarle , Fluvanna and Louisa. This contract will install or modify traffic signals and install closed circuit video cameras along Interstate corridors at various locations determined by the Regional Traffic Engineer, which will improve the safety and efficiency of intersections. The cameras will allow the Smart Traffic Center to monitor traffic and roadway incidents. Pedestrian signals, crosswalk striping and pedestrian signing are installed as part of the traffic signal improvements, as the need is determined. A completion date is set for Dec. 31, 2008.
