STAUNTON – The National Work Zone Awareness Week is April 2-7. A variety of activities will take place at the Virginia Department of Transportation, beginning today with Safety Brakes at several rest areas throughout Virginia .
The safety breaks in the VDOT Staunton district will be at the rest area in the Interstate 81 northbound and southbound lanes near mile marker 262 in northern Rockingham County and at the Jerry’s Run Virginia Welcome Center and rest area in Alleghany County near the West Virginia state line. The safety breaks will be from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Several activities will occur at various locations in Virginia during the week of April 2-7. In the VDOT Staunton District there will be a press conference at the Smart Traffic Center at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 2. This press conference will be repeated at the VDOT Winchester office at 2 p.m. that day. The press conference will contain a brief presentation on work zone statistics and safety messages and will also feature Forester Wright who oversees VDOT’s Staunton District Work Zone Program. Wright will share real-life stories from workers who operate in work zones on a daily basis.
Also on Monday, April 2 at 12:15 p.m. there will be a brief wreath laying ceremony at the VDOT Workers Memorial, hosted by Allan Sumpter, VDOT’s Charlottesville residency administrator. The VDOT Workers Memorial is located on Interstate 64 on the eastern side of Afton Mountain near mile marker 103.
Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
