“Youth Art Month” and “Music in Our Schools” is an annual national observance held each March to emphasize the value of fine arts education for all children and to encourage public support for quality art programs. Youth Art Month is sponsored by the National Parent Teacher Association, The Arts and Crafts Material Institute, and the National Art Education Association and work to direct attention to the value of art education which develops divergent and critical thinking, multicultural awareness, and technical communication, and expressive skills.
The annual event is held each March gives public schools an opportunity to showcase the quarry of fine arts programs in our schools, K-12. This is our way of informing the public about the value of art experiences in the lives of young people. The Youth Art Month Art exhibit and choral, instrumental music, and drama performances have been an annual event for the last 16 years. The event also showcases the awarding of an art scholarship by the Waynesboro Junior Women's Club to senior art students who plan to include art in the lives and careers. And this year Wendy Battts, president of the club, will present the scholarship to Lauren DeMoss and Whitny Dyke.
As a part of the statewide observance, school districts are asked to make a report and show visual documentation in a book, which is submitted to The Youth Art Month Virginia Art education Association committee. The YAM books are judged by regents.
