ONE CONTRACT AWARDED IN THE STAUNTON DISTRICT
STAUNTON – On July 20, 2007, Virginia Department of Transportation Commissioner David Ekern, P.E. approved one project located in the VDOT Staunton District.
The Staunton District serves Clarke, Warren , Page, Frederick , Shenandoah, Rockingham, Augusta , Highland , Rockbridge, Alleghany, and Bath counties.
Fairfield-Echols, LLC of Fishersville was awarded a $670,819.93 contract in Bath County on Route 635 from 0.19 mile west of Route 640 to 0.05 mile west to replace the bridge and approaches over Mill Creek. The bridge is currently a single lane 1932 Truss Bridge with a width of 12 feet 1 inch, and the unpaved roadway has a variable width of 12 feet to 15 feet. The proposed bridge will be shifted downstream approximately 10 feet to avoid two streams and is also a truss design. The deck width will be 22 feet wide and the roadway will be 18 feet wide. A 9.2 mile detour will be in place during the bridge replacement. A final completion date is set for April 16, 2008.

Highway work zones in the Staunton District
The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath , Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland , Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

Interstate 64
* No activity reported.
Interstate 81
* (NEW) Various Locations – Alternating lane and shoulder closures north and southbound due to guardrail replacement from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday night through Saturday morning with flagger traffic control.
* (NEW) Various Locations – Bridge deck maintenance north and southbound with one lane traffic 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning.
* Various Locations – Mowing in Verona and Fishersville.

* Route 340 (Rosser Avenue) – Trucks entering from worksite from Route 608 to Route 1501 for utility work in the street with flagger traffic control during daylight hours Monday through Friday.
Secondary Roads
* Route 602 (Walkers Creek Road) – Road closed due to bridge replacement at .20 mile north of Route 681 (Mt. Hermon Road) to 3.0 miles south of Route 682 (McKinley Road) Monday, August 13 through Friday, Sept. 7. Detour is five miles long: Southbound traffic should detour using Route 682 east to Route 252 south ( Middlebrook Road ) to Route 681 west to Route 602. Northbound traffic should detour using Route 681 west to Route 252 north to Route 682 west to Route 602.
* Route 608 (Tinkling Springs) – Milling with shoulder and lane closure northbound due to construction of right turn lane near Route 635 Monday through Friday.
* Route 631 – Drainage improvements and road alignment for the constructions of a turn lane at Route 285 and Route 608. Flagger traffic control with estimated completion mid-October 2007. Motorist should be aware of new traffic pattern.
* Route 636 – Shoulder closure east and west due to road widening from Route 285/608 to 300-feet east of the AMC Hospital entrance Monday, August 13 through Monday, August 20.
* Route 650 (North Oak Lane) – Road closure over South River due to bridge replacement from Route 624 to Route 664 with signs posted through October 15, 2007. Traffic detoured on Route 624 ( Mt. Torrey Road ) and Route 664 ( Lyndhurst Road ).
* Route 778 – Spot leveling from Route 750 to Route 777 with one lane road.
* Route 785 – Grading and drainage work with lane closures with flagger traffic control Monday, August 13 through Friday, November 2, 2007.
* (NEW) Route 797 – Grading and draining with alternating lane closures from Route 608 to Route 7 96 with flagger traffic control Sunday through Saturday.
* Various Roads – Shoulder work, patching, paving and mowing. Surface treatment Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with traffic controlled by flaggers and pilot truck.
