Wayne Theatre ready for its closeup - June 23

The Wayne Theatre marquee made it past the cutting room floor and into the big-budget comedy, "Evan Almighty," which was partially filmed in Waynesboro, Va. In addition to the Wayne Theatre, shots of Main Street in downtown Waynesboro have also been prominent in television advertisements for the film. For several days in April 2006, Waynesboro was transformed into fictional Huntsville - and several local dignitaries including city manager Doug Walker were cast as extras in the film. Several downtown stores were outfitted with awnings during the filming and the Heritage Museum was transformed into an outdoor cafe.

Most of the filming took place in neighboring Crozet where the Biblical ark was constructed. Other filming took place in Richmond, Staunton, and Hollywood.

The film is set to hit theaters on June 22 and stars Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman as well as other big names in Hollywood including Lauren Graham, John Goodman and Wanda Sykes. It is directed by University of Virginia graduate Tom Shadyac and is on record as the most expensive comedy film ever made.
The Wayne Theatre has been closed since 1999. The Wayne Theatre Alliance, a nonprofit group, is currently raising funds to bring this historical structure back to life with plans for a $5.4 million dollar renovation. In addition to film, the theater will be used as a performing arts venue.
