MOTORISTS NEED CAUTION WHEN TRAVELING IN SHENANDOAH VALLEY THIS MORNING



STAUNTON – Motorists should use extreme caution when traveling on roads in the Shenandoah Valley . Although many roads are clear, drivers should be on the alert for debris from ice and trees due to heavy ice on vegetation. Be aware of slick surfaces on bridges and overpasses. Virginia Department of Transportation crews have been treating roads throughout the Valley and will continue with operations today.



Here are the winter road conditions as of 5:00 a.m.



Interstate 64 – Moderate conditions in Augusta County . Minor conditions in Alleghany County and on Afton Mountain in Augusta County . Clear conditions in Rockbridge County .



Interstate 66 – Clear



Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions in Augusta and Rockingham County . Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.



Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Bath , Augusta and Highland counties. Minor conditions in Alleghany and Frederick counties. Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Warren , Clarke and Page counties.



Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Bath , Highland and Augusta counties. Minor conditions are in Alleghany, Shenandoah, Frederick, Warren, Clarke, and Page counties. Clear conditions are in Rockbridge and Rockingham counties.

STAUNTON – Most roads are clear in the Shenandoah Valley tonight as rain and freezing rain spread through the region. Here are the road conditions as of 10 p.m.



Interstate 64 – Clear in Augusta and Rockbridge counties. Minor conditions exist in Alleghany County .



Interstate 66 – Clear



Interstate 81 – Clear in Rockbridge, Augusta and Rockingham counties. Minor conditions exist in Shenandoah and Frederick counties.



Primary roads are clear in Rockbridge, Highland , Augusta , Rockingham, Warren, Clarke and Page counties. Minor conditions exist in Shenandoah, Frederick and Alleghany counties. Moderate conditions are in Bath County .

TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF December 17 -21, 2007

Highway work zones in the Staunton District



The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath , Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland , Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

AUGUSTA COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 96 – Bridge cleaning and painting. Alternating lane and shoulder closures. Sunday to Saturday, 24 hours a day except 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.



Interstate 81

* Various locations – Guardrail installation. Alternating lane and shoulder closures both north and southbound. Night work Monday to Thursday, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.



Primary Roads

* Route 250 –Trucks entering from Route 636 between Route 637 to Route 358 and from Route 608 between Route 608 to Route 1360.

* Route 340 (Rosser Avenue) – Trucks entering from work site from Route 608 to Route 1501 for utility work with flagger traffic control during daylight hours.



Secondary Roads

* Route 604 – Tree trimming from Route 701 to the Rockbridge County line, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* (NEW) Route 608 – Gas line repairs from Route 639 to Route 1151. Work being done by Columbia Gas.

* (NEW) Route 612 – Pipe installation on Route 612 between I-81 and Route 792 with shoulder closures. Work will be Monday through Wednesday, Dec. 17, 18, & 19.

* Route 613 – Shoulder repair from Springhill Road to Route 42. Single lane traffic.

* (NEW) Route 613 – Tree trimming from the Staunton City Limits to Route 662, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* (NEW) Route 622 – Bridge deck repair 0.3 mile east of Waynesboro City limits and 1 mile west of Route 950. Work will be Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 17-18. Expect lane closures at the bridge with traffic controlled by flaggers.

* (NEW) Route 662 – Tree trimming, Route 608 to Route 693, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* Route 670 – Tree trimming from Route 252 to Route 604, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* (NEW) Route 675 – Bridge deck repair at the intersection of Route 604 and Route 675. Work will be Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 19-20. Expect lane closures at the bridge with traffic controlled by flaggers.

* Route 676 – Tree trimming from Route 670 to Route 726, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* Route 693 – Tree trimming from Route 252N to Route 252 south, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* Route 898 – Tree trimming from Route 608 to end of state maintenance, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* Route 903 – Tree trimming from Route 693 to end of state maintenance, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* Route 912 – Tree trimming from Route 610 to Route 660, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* Route 914 – Tree trimming from Route 608 to Route 635, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* Route 933 – Tree trimming from Route 340S to end of state maintenance, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* Route 1401 – Tree trimming from Route 1402 to Route 1403, Monday to Friday, daylight hours.

* (NEW) Various Roads – Shoulder repairs, brush cutting, pothole patching, and scraping dirt roads. Debris removal in the Verona area with lane closures.



HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 250 (Town of McDowell) – Bridge work between Route 645 and Route 654 beginning Tuesday, December 18 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers.



Secondary Roads

* Route 615 – Cutting dead trees in the McDowell area.

* (NEW) Various Roads – Pothole repairs in the McDowell area. Shoulder repair, ditching, grading, and stone stabilization in the Monterey area with lane closures controlled by flaggers.



ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

Interstate 81

* No planned activity.



Primary Roads

* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Expect shoulder closures due to commercial entrance work between Route 644 (Resort Drive) and Route 646 (Bloomer Springs Road) from Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 257 ( Dinkel Avenue ) – Water line installation. Shoulder closure from Route 1310 ( Mt. Crawford Avenue ) to Route 867 ( Old Bridgewater Road ). Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Eastbound shoulder closures from Route 1604 ( Tiger Camp Road ) to Route 340 ( Eastside Highway ) for commercial entrance work. Work is Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

*Various – Pipe installation, patching, shoulder repairs, ditching operations, and grading.



Secondary Roads

* Route 644 ( Resort Drive ) – Roadway reconstruction between Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) and Route 646 west ( Bloomer Springs Road ). Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 655 ( Lawyer Road ) – Shoulder closures between Route 1803 ( Ann Dove Drive ) and Route 674 ( Duck Run Road ) for entrance work. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 686 ( Woods Road ) – Drainage work from Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) and Route 689 ( Shen Lake Drive ). Shoulder closures, weekdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 688 ( Taylor Springs Road ) – Sewer line installation from Route 687 ( Massanetta Springs Road ) to Route 704 ( Boyers Road ). Single lane traffic, flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 727 ( Airport Road ) – Entrance work from Route 698 ( Wise Hollow Road ) to Route 888 ( Weigh Station Road ). Shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 767 ( Willow Run Road ) – Road construction from .14 mile west of Route 42 ( Harpine Highway ) to Route 910 ( Fort Lynne Road ). Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 867 ( Old Bridgewater Road ) – Water line installation. Shoulder closure from Route 257 ( Dinkel Avenue ) to Route 888 ( Weigh Station Lane ). Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 996 (McGaheysville Road) – Turn lane installation between Route 654 (Montevideo Circle) and Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) with intermittent lane closures using flagger traffic control Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* Route 996 (McGaheysville Road) – Lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers between Route 651 (Power Dam Road) and Route 843 (Cemetary Road) for water line installation. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
