Missing Person - January 24

Earlier today the Waynesboro Police Department began investigating a missing persons’ complaint involving 77 year old Francis Lloyd VanGundy. At approximately 10:45pm this evening we received information from the Grant County Sheriffs Office in West Virginia, that they had located VanGundy. At this point it is unknown how VanGundy ended up in West Virginia, but he was found unharmed. His family has been contacted and apprised of his whereabouts and they are currently making arrangements to bring him back to Virginia.

No other information is available at this time.

Missing Elderly Person

Waynesboro Police are requesting the public’s assistance locating a 77 year old Rockbridge County man who left the Waynesboro Super 8 Motel this morning in his vehicle and has not been heard from or seen since.

Police were notified by the man’s daughter, who resides in Augusta County just north of Waynesboro, this morning around 7:00 A.M. that her father had checked out of the hotel between 4:00 – 5:00 AM and left the premises in his vehicle. This was highly irregular, according to the daughter since she was to link up with her father at Super 8 where they would travel to Dulles Airport by car for a flight to Kansas. The trip was planned to attend the funeral of a family member in that state and there would have been no reason for him to have left the hotel prior to his daughter’s arrival. The man’s daughter has indicated that her father has been suffering from a diminished mental state and although not confirmed through medical diagnosis is exhibiting signs of early Dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Police have searched areas along possible routes to the victim’s daughter’s home and notified adjacent jurisdictions including Rockbridge County authorities where the victim resides in an attempt to locate him or his vehicle. Additionally a BOL was sent out earlier to Law enforcement agencies in region III which is now being upgraded to nationwide due to the length of time which has passed.

Police request that members of the public contact the nearest law enforcement agency or dial 911 if they see the following person or vehicle.

Age: 77

White Male, Gray Hair, Blue Eyes, 5’8”, 175 lbs

Victim was possibly wearing a Brown/Yellow Flannel shirt, white under shirt, blue trousers and black shoes.

He left Super 8 Motel driving his Blue 2005 Mercury Montego bearing Virginia License JMT- 1155.
