Fire Destroys Barn - May 24

Thursday 24 2007 – 1:55 am Hildebrand Church Rd. A Barn owned by Erica, Michaels caught fire and was completely destroyed. The fire is still under investigation to determine what exactly what caused it. No one was injured no animals were in the barn at the time. There was a 1966 Thunderbird on the 2^nd level that was a total loss.

Man Holds off Police In Stuarts Draft.- May 23

Wednesday 23, 2007 - 5:15 pm Stuarts Draft 169 Sherwood Drive A man has held officers from Waynesboro, Staunton, Augusta County and the State Police. The man is inside the home alone, and is not holding any hostages. He is armed with and high power riffle. The man started causing problems when a neighbor asking him if her daughter was inside his house. The man then made threats against her. The woman talk her way out and then she called police. The SWAT team as well as a snipers and State Police where called in to assed in getting the man out of the house.

VDOT EMPLOYEES RECEIVE TWO OF SEVEN GOVERNOR’S AWARDS

RICHMOND – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) employees received recognition during a ceremony in Richmond on Thursday, May 17, honoring state employees for their service to the commonwealth. VDOT employees took top honors in teamwork and workplace safety as part of the 2007 Governor’s Awards. This year marked the first time VDOT employees received two awards. Five awards were given in additional categories.

Langston T. Williams, assistant district equipment manager in VDOT’s Staunton District, received the 2007 Governor’s Award for Workplace Safety. The award is given to an employee who leads the way in promoting a safe and healthy work environment. Following a fire that destroyed a district tractor, Williams helped develop a national alert campaign designed to increase awareness about possible future fires with the particular model tractor. Williams also worked closely with the tractor’s manufacturer on a worldwide safety campaign. His efforts also resulted in the manufacturer’s free replacement of the district’s tractor.

Garrett Moore, VDOT Staunton District administrator said, “The initiative and proactive actions demonstrated by L.T. Williams are exemplary and illustrative of the high standards he brings to his job daily.”

A team of 25 employees in VDOT’s Central Office and Richmond District received the 2007 Governor’s Award for Teamwork. This award is given to a team of employees who exemplify the qualities that make teamwork an essential part of an agency’s success. The VDOT team worked on a project involving replacing the Judith Stewart Dresser Memorial Bridge on Route 5 over the Chickahominy River . The team developed a project that included a 2,500-foot-long, fixed-span structure to rise 52 feet above the river with one-half mile of approaches. Projects of this magnitude typically take three or more years to develop, but this team completed development in 18 months.

Both Williams and the Central Office and Richmond District team were recipients of VDOT Commissioner’s Awards for Outstanding Achievement earlier in May. This award is given by the Commissioner in recognition of outstanding accomplishments that have positively impacted the agency.

Other VDOT employees receiving nominations for the Governor’s Award include:

Gene Higgs, of the Staunton District, who was nominated for the Governor’s Award for Career Achievement for his 43 years of exceptional service to VDOT.

Barbara Reese, Richard Walton, Thomas Hawthorne, Richard Prezioso, Kerry Bates, Deborah Brown, Jim Smith and James Bryant, from the Central Office and Richmond District, who were nominated as a team for the Governor’s Award for Innovation for exploring alternative means of financing the operation and maintenance costs of the Pocahontas Parkway, resulting in the establishment of the agency’s first public-private partnership.

David Patton, James Carr, Bryan Kelley, Donna Purcell Mayes, Calvin Smith, Dwayne Altice, Fatemah Allahdoust, Gaylynn Abram, Al Covey, Tom Saunders, Trevor Wrayton, Kimberly Spence and Cecilia Penaloza, who were nominated as a team for the Governor’s Award for Customer Service for developing the commonwealth’s first statewide bicycle map.

Dan Roosevelt, Michael Fitch and Audrey Moruza, who were nominated for the Governor’s Star Award for the development of a unique, data-driven methodology for conducting a statewide review of area headquarters.

c. Receive the report and recommendation of the Planning Commission on the request of Rutherford Construction, agent, for Edgeworth, LLC, owner, for Preliminary Subdivision Plat approval of property described legally as Tax Map/Parcel 62-1-5 & 5B, 23.975 acres located on Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro, Virginia, presently zoned RB-2 (Multiple Dwelling District), for a 90-lot subdivision to include 19 single-family lots and 71 townhomes.

d. Amy Lynn Cobb, 30 years of age

White Female, Height: 5’4”, Weight: 150 lbs, Hair: Brown

Ms. Cobb was last seen on 05-19-07 at approximately 7:00am. She allegedly left her residence in Staunton to go to work at Wal-Mart in Waynesboro, VA. She has not been heard from since. She may be operating the following vehicle:

White 1997 Chevy Cavalier 4 Door

2nd Annual Main Street Muscle Car Show - May 19

Saturday 19, 2007- Everyone that owns or enjoys muscle cars, street rods, or custom bikes made their way into downtown Waynesboro on Saturday. Over 100 vehicles where on display for the 2^nd annual Main Street Muscle car show, hosted by Waynesboro Downtown Development, Inc. (WDDI) . Vehicles lined Main Street in downtown Waynesboro

Relay For Life - May 19

Friday 18, 2007 – 6:00 pm Wilson Elementary School night, people in Augusta Co. area are raising money for cancer research. Relays for Life draw in more than 3 million Americans nation-wide. Volunteers worked throw the rain and the chilly temperatures to make shure that every thing was ready . There were teams made up of families, kids, and love ones. The walkers include survivors who were the first to walk around the track. Last year, the event was a smashing success with 65 teams walking through the night. There were contests, and live bands to keep the walkers going until 9 a.m. Saturday.

3rd Friday - May 19

Friday 18, 2007- Third Fridays returned to downtown Waynesboro this month with the second of its monthly free concert series. The Vernon Fischer Trio will perform live jazz, classics, and contemporary music on May 18, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 329 W. Main St., in the heart of the downtown district.

Henderson joins WTA as Capital Campaign Coordinator - May 18

Henderson’s background includes working for the Department of Latin American Affairs for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. Her role there included event planning, maintaining membership and financial records. She has also worked as a master trainer for a program designed to assist families in coping with the military lifestyle and in developing leadership growth and has worked as an International Promotions Coordinator for Polygram Records in Madrid, Spain.

Henderson’s role will be to work with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to implement plans for the Wayne Theatre Alliance’s $2.75 million Capital Campaign. She will keep records of all communications between the Alliance, the Capital Campaign committees and contributors to the campaign, and handle all followup correspondence. She will also maintain the database for all records related to the campaign, will coordinate volunteers for the campaign and will arrange for all events connected with fund-raising for the restoration of the theatre.

"We are very excited to have Sandi on board with us as we move forward toward the public phase of the Alliance's Capital Campaign," said Clair F. Myers, Executive Director of the Wayne Theatre Alliance, a non-profit 501(c)3 public charity. "Her attention to detail and the energy and experience she brings to the table will most certainly result in a successful campaign."
